Looking for ways to get more connected with the LGBTQ community in the Bay Area? Want to get involved with the exciting and important work of preserving and interpreting LGBTQ history? Consider becoming a Front Desk Museum Volunteer at the GLBT Historical Society Museum!
As a community-based organization, the GLBT Historical Society relies on the dedicated efforts of a legion of enthusiastic volunteers who dedicate their time and skills to our mission. With our reopening after six months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers are essential to providing access for everyone who comes to the museum!
Becoming a Front Desk Museum Volunteer is a great way to gain new life and job skills, further your knowledge about interesting queer topics, and serve the LGBTQ community!
Front Desk Museum Volunteer duties include:
- facilitating day-to-day museum operations;
- providing a warm and welcoming presence to visitors;
- answering general inquiries;
- interpreting exhibits and artifacts in their unique perspectives; and
- assisting with ticket, membership and merchandise sales.
Our museum volunteers are:
- friendly and outgoing;
- interested in LGBTQ history and community;
- experienced in or expanding their skills in retail and customer-service, front-desk and reception operations; and
- at least 18 years old.
Initial commitment: Two 2.5-3 hour shifts per month on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during open hours. Regular volunteers may take on additional duties and hours with supplemental training!
Perks and Benefits of Volunteering: In addition to participating in our enthusiastic community of volunteers and staff and enjoying a behind-the-scenes look at the work of the GLBT Historical Society, volunteers receive the following:
- A complimentary one-year membership to the GLBT Historical Society and year-round free museum admission, along with accompanying North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) benefits, which allow you to visit over 1,000 museums in the U.S. for free;
- A free GLBT Historical Society tote bag and t-shirt;
- A 30% discount on merchandise in the museum store and online; and
- Invitations to volunteer appreciation parties, special events and additional celebrations.
