OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM AND ROLE

The Local Government Commission is recruiting 50+ Fellows for the first statewide Climate Action Corps cohort through our CivicSpark AmeriCorps program.
In January 2021, the first cohort of the California Climate Action Corps will launch in Fresno, Stockton, San Jose, Los Angeles and Redlands. Fellows will serve for 7.5 months with public agencies, grassroots organizations, and universities and colleges to engage communities in climate action.
In its first year, Climate Action Corps Fellows will focus on projects in partnership with vulnerable communities such as:
- Expanding urban tree planting initiatives that lower home energy bills in low income communities while also reducing extreme heat impacts,
- Accelerating edible food rescue programs that address the state’s food insecurity crisis while also reducing landfill emissions and,
- Promoting wildfire prevention and mitigation through education and assistance in high risk and high need neighborhoods.
Fellows will get exceptional real-world project management and community engagement experience as they serve alongside organizations and regional leaders responding to critical emerging climate and equity issues. Fellows will gain:
- An exceptional outcome-driven project implementation experience.
- Mentorship and project level support.
- Training on project-related tools and techniques.
- Statewide networking with local, regional and state leaders.

WHAT YOU CAN BRING

AmeriCorps Requirements

- Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States*
- Ability to pass FBI, CA Department of Justice, out-of-state (if applicable), and National Sex - Offender Public Registry background checks prior to service

CivicSpark Climate Action Corps Requirements

- A 2 or 4-year degree (i.e. AA, BA/BS) from an accredited college or university
- Commitment to the full term of service (7.5 months, 1,200+ hours)
- Capability to work in a professional office setting
- Strong communication (both verbal and written) and teamwork skills

Preferred qualifications

- A degree in a related field
- One year of relevant experience
- Past service experience (e.g., volunteering, community service, etc.)
- Experience with, or training in, outreach, facilitation and/or education
- Being local to the community you will serve in.

Desirable

- Experience with project implementation
- Comfort with quantitative work, including data collection and analysis

FELLOW BENEFITS

CivicSpark Climate Action Corps Fellows receive the following benefits for the term of their service:
- $14,000 Living Allowance (before taxes) spread evenly over 7.5 months
- $4,336.50 Segal Education Award
- SNAP / CalFresh Benefits - for those eligible
- Forbearance on existing qualifying student loans and payment of interest accrued during service
- Child Care assistance to qualifying fellows, paid to an eligible provider of your choice.
