ORGANIZATION: Centro Romero

  • 22 people are interested

Centro Romero is a community-based organization serving the refuge and immigrant population in northeast Chicago. Rooted in the deep commitment to social justice exemplified by the eponymous Saint Oscar Romero, we seek to improve the lives and livelihoods of the communities we serve in a number of ways, including through adult education. We are in need of volunteers who are Illinois residents to help tutor and teach adult students in our ESL program. Hours are flexible--we will work around your schedule. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to avoid a gap in their employment history while on furlough due to Covid-19. And not only is it a great resume builder, but it is also a way to make a difference in the Chicago community. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and walks of life, but you must be 16 or older and reside within the state of Illinois in order to volunteer with us.

Mission Statement

Helping the immigrant and refugee community achieve self-sufficiency for more than 30 years. Through education, Centro Romero emphasizes the development of the whole family unit, the creation of community leadership and self-reliance.

Description

Centro Romero has been a community-based organization that serves the refugee immigrant population on the northeast side of Chicago. Our interrelated programs include the Youth Learning and Leadership Program, Family Services (encapsulating the Domestic Violence Prevention Program, the Public Benefits Program, and the New Americans Initiative), Adult Education, and Legal Services. These are essential services that support healthy personal and social development of participants. Our long-term organizational goal is to bridge a disenfranchised community of immigrants and refugees into mainstream American society as well as improving their opportunity for upward social mobility. Long-term sustainable growth of our target population will only be achieved through education, leadership development, advocacy, and service; we accordingly focus our energy on these related initiatives.
