A large number of volunteers from the San Joaquin area come to Stockton Shelter throughout the year to help the homeless. Our Shelter is open 24/7, 365 days a year and houses about 350 men, women and children per day.
Because of the hands-on labor required to provide the services we offer, volunteers are always needed. Whether playing with the children, tutoring, doing landscaping, fixing up a room or one of the many other projects available, your help is always appreciated.
Things are a little different because of COVID, but we still need volunteers. Please call or email for more information on how you can help the homeless in your community!

Mission Statement

With support from our community, Stockton Shelter for the Homeless compassionately addresses the needs of homeless individuals and families by providing safe shelter, basic necessities and a structured opportunity to regain self-sufficiency.

Description

Stockton Shelter for the Homeless was founded in 1986 by a group of philanthropic business and government professionals to address the issue of homelessness in San Joaquin County. They recognized the need for a non-denominational emergency shelter in the Stockton community, and felt compelled to act. The original shelter opened its doors in December of 1987 and has operated daily since that time. Initially focusing on shelter for single men, our services quickly expanded to meet the needs of the entire homeless community, including shelter for families, case management and referrals, meal service and transitional housing programs. In 1989, Stockton Shelter for the Homeless took over operation of a shelter for families that was in danger of closing its doors. Eventually it became clear that we could better serve our mission by locating our facilities at a single campus. In 1993 the Family Shelter was moved to a brand new facility adjacent to the original shelter, now known as the Men’s Shelter. That same year we also opened a Day Shelter for single men needing a place to stay off the streets during the day. Today Stockton Shelter for the Homeless continues to operate a day and night shelter for single men, a separate shelter for women, families and transitional housing for homeless veterans and people living with HIV/AIDS. We provide dozens of other services for the homeless of our community everyday.
