Description
The Hospice volunteers have been a vital part of the hospice concept since the very beginning of the program. In most hospices today, volunteers time makes up about 5-10 percent of the total hours spent by the team in providing patient care. The volunteer's is considered the most valuable in terms of all-around benefits to the patient and families. You as a volunteer, will have the opportunity to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support. (Within your scope of practice, of course). As a hospice volunteer, it is essential that you be a caring, emotionally mature, committed person who is comfortable talking about death, dying and providing compassion. If that is the kind of person you are, you will probably find that you gain a sense of satisfaction from making a difference in people's lives and glean valuable insights from relationships with patients and their families.
