About Alliance for Smiles

Alliance for Smiles is a registered 501c3 nonprofit with a mission to forever improve the lives of children and communities impacted by cleft by providing free, comprehensive treatment while building local capacity for long-term care.

It's little known that children born with cleft conditions in many countries face tremendous physical, emotional, and social challenges. Approximately one in ten are killed by their own families or communities for being born with the condition, as it is often considered a curse or spiritual punishment. Those who survive have difficulty breastfeeding, are prone to other serious medical conditions, and are often shunned, bullied, abused, or abandoned.

The solution is a relatively quick surgery (often around one hour) after which the children’s lives and opportunities are transformed forever. Unfortunately, most of them do not live in areas where trained surgeons are available, and if they do, the surgeries are often unaffordable.

That’s where Alliance for Smiles (AfS) comes in, undertaking medical missions to offer free surgeries for children impacted by cleft lip and palate in underserved regions of the world, training the medical teams that serve them, and establishing Treatment Centers to provide long-term, sustainable care for these patients.

AfS and its medical missions are powered by a lean team & board, along with almost one thousand volunteers, including both medical and non-medical volunteers. We’d love for you to join us in this mission!

About the role(s)

Change lives forever with Alliance for Smiles! At AfS, we are passionate about transforming the course of children’s lives, one smile at a time. We’ve provided surgeries for over 7,000 children to date, and none of that would’ve been possible without the incredible support of some amazing volunteers. Join us in this mission!

We have openings for internships with impact across a few disciplines. We’ll highlight the primary role this document is focused on but also include the rest below in case you see a role that you’re more interested in or know someone you could refer to us:

Development & Fundraising: Asking for money is some people’s worst nightmare, while other people have an amazing knack for telling people about an important issue that matters and showing them how they can use their dollars and networks to help support a community in need. It’s a beautiful & incredibly important gift! If that sounds like you, we’d love to have your help with applying for grants, creating & launching fundraising campaigns, and hosting events (both in-person - when it’s safe - and online) to help raise the funds we need to change children’s lives forever.

Additional roles:

Marketing & Communications: Are you a powerful storyteller with words and/or visuals? Do you love helping build a brand and strategizing about the best ways to get the word out about issues that you care about? Are you skilled at utilizing social media, writing & copy-editing, and/or capturing & editing fantastic video content? If you said "yes" to even a fraction of those questions, we’d love to connect with you!

Website Design & Support: Are you tech savvy and love working on websites to help create a beautiful, user-friendly experience for visitors to the site? Our site, built with WordPress, serves lots of groups - volunteers, donors, people who want to learn more about cleft, and now - with COVID-19 - it will also host training videos for our partners at hospitals around the world to help them develop & hone their skills to support cleft patients. Now more than ever, we’re hosting more campaigns and information on our site and we’d love to have your help developing it!

International Program Support: The world has changed and for the first time in our 16 year history, we’re not able to go on international medical missions for the time being. We have pivoted & adapted to the changing times & circumstances. The trainings we would normally be giving medical teams at our partner hospitals around the world are now being conducted online thanks to our incredible nurses, surgeons, and translators. As we continue to roll out this new program feature, we will need support in logistics coordination, curriculum development, and material management. We especially welcome the support of interns with language skills in the following: French, Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, and Burmese. Help us continue achieving our mission in new and innovative ways around the world!

Because we are a small but mighty team, we all wear a lot of hats and our work changes constantly. Our interns do the same. The beauty of the AfS team and volunteers is that everyone steps up to help out and has a great time while doing it!

Most of our internships are part to full time (approx. 10- 40 hours/week) depending on availability, and a minimum three month commitment is preferred. Scheduling is flexible.

While internships with AfS are unpaid, it is possible to receive a small stipend to cover any relevant costs. Normally, interns are provided a desk, computer, etc at our office in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco, however, the AfS team is currently working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
