Archipelagos' Media Team creates material concerning biodiversity, environmental conservation and public health issues through various platforms, with the goal of raising awareness and making effective changes. This internship will mostly be office work, however interns will have the opportunity to participate in boat-based surveys and research expeditions.

Accordingly to interests and skill sets, interns will be involved with a variety of projects including:

Wildlife and Landscape Photography for:

  • Photographing g. dolphins, turtles, whales, seals, birds and other species of wildlife
  • Photographing the various research and conservation actions carried out by Archipelagos’ teams, by participating in boat-based as well as land-based surveys
  • Photographing the varied landscape of the Eastern Aegean Islands
  • Assisting members of the research teams with basic photography and editing techniques

Nature Video / Film Production for:

  • Creating and editing footage of the various research and conservation projects carried out by Archipelagos’ teams, by participating in boat-based research expeditions as well as land surveys and terrestrial biodiversity surveys
  • Creating and editing footage of marine wildlife (e.g. dolphins, turtles), using both standard and underwater cameras
  • Creating and editing footage of terrestrial wildlife (e.g. birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals), combining the use of standard digital cameras with wildlife camera traps
  • Showcasing the varied marine and terrestrial landscapes of the Aegean Islands
  • Assisting members of the research teams with basic filming and editing techniques

Illustration of Flora and Fauna for:

  • Creating scientific illustrations of mammal, bird, reptilian and amphibian, species
  • Creating scientific illustrations of terrestrial plant, shrub and tree species
  • Creating scientific illustrations of marine mammals, fish, invertebrates, as well as marine flora
  • Creating illustrations for informational material used in public awareness activities

Media and Public Relations for:

  • Creating press releases for newspapers, online media, TV and radio
  • Increasing awareness of local and global environmental issues through social media
  • Promoting and encouraging environmental conservation on an individual level through social media
  • Creating informational material and updates regarding Archipelagos
  • Expanding Archipelagos’ partnerships through networking

These projects provide fieldwork and hands-on research opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students who have achieved a bachelor’s or master’s degree, and who are looking to gain experience outside of the classroom. The skills and expertise acquired through this internship are useful towards a professional career in art, communications, education, design, or related fields.

Applicant profile

This internship program is available to applicants who have a background in the field of art, communications, education, design, or science communication.

Applicants must have a personal portfolio showcasing skills in photography, editing, illustrating, or graphic design.
Applicants must be able to work both independently and as part of a dynamic, multi-cultural, multidisciplinary team.

Additional Information

Internship duration normally ranges between 3 - 12 months, although shorter or longer internship periods may be arranged to cover the needs of groups or individuals.

Archipelagos’ research bases and stations are in the Eastern Aegean Sea, on the islands of Samos and Lipsi as well as onboard the research vessels. Interns often move between research bases and boats depending on where the surveys will take place.

As a non-profit research institute, the internships we offer are unpaid. This educational/research experience requires a monthly fee of 650 euro to cover living expenses, the cost of training, use of research equipment and travelling with the research vessels, use of the office facilities, as well as insurance. For internships of less than 3 months in duration the participation fees are raised to 780 euro per month.

Students and recent graduates and researchers are advised to search for possible funding through their universities, by getting in touch with the International Office/ Placement/ Erasmus+ Offices at their Universities or other relevant grant providing organizations in their region.
