Literacy New Jersey - West Hudson Programs

Tutoring session

Literacy NJ is a non-profit that provides free literacy-based education to adults in New Jersey, USA. We are currently seeking volunteers to be online tutors for our High School Equivalency program to help adults in New Jersey study for and earn their GED. We offer all five subjects of tutoring; reading, writing, math, science, social studies.

Our Online Volunteer Literacy Tutors will:

  • receive training on how to tutor adults online during the end of October 2020
  • commit to meeting weekly with a small group for at least 6 months
  • meet online with their small group 1 time per week for 2 hours
  • help reduce illiteracy in the community
  • be a part of a program that provides a long-lasting, positive impact in the community

Mission Statement

The mission of Literacy Volunteers of America-West Hudson, Inc. is to promote increased literacy and conversational English skills to adult students in Kearny, Harrison, and East Newark, NJ. Student-centered instruction occurs through the effective use of volunteers, the provision of support services for volunteers and students, and collaboration with individuals, groups, or organizations desiring to foster increased literacy. These services are offered to students free of charge.

We recruit and train volunteers and then match them with adults in our community needing help in basic literacy and/or English speaking skills.
