San Francisco Night Ministry

Night Ministry Care Line
One of our ads.

Night Ministry welcomes students and interns who are looking to obtain clinical hours or chaplaincy training as part of a program at another site or center, including Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students. Such students and interns serve like other volunteers on our telephone Care Line -- working from home anywhere in the world -- but take on a higher level of responsibility and commitment as part of their training.

To learn more about obtaining hours or training on our Care Line, read on, and feel free to contact us.

Night Ministry Care Line Counselors (CLCs) offer compassionate, non-judgmental support to callers struggling with loneliness, depression, anxiety, worry, grief and other concerns. We offer spiritual care that is open and affirming. Our CLCs come from many faith traditions and spiritual backgrounds. We help people make meaning for themselves in line with their own understanding of reality.

During hours when most social service organizations are closed, our night-time Care Line receives 18-20 calls per night, each of which can last anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. Many of our callers face mental and physical health concerns, financial worries and social isolation, and they turn to us for counseling, conversation and referral services. We have three shifts available, from 8pm to 12am; from 10pm to 2am, and from 12am - 4 am (all Pacific time).

CLCs volunteer from home. They can be located anywhere in the world. Though we are San Francisco based, we have CLCs from as far away as Hawaii and Ireland. Our CLCs form a community of supportive caregivers, even as we care for others. Join us!

About San Francisco Night Ministry

Mission Statement

The San Francisco Night Ministry helps our neighbors in great need, when their needs will not be otherwise met in the nighttime hours, and we assist them as we are able in maintaining community at all times. We increase access to the human right of spiritual care -- at night, on the streets, and on the phones. We meet people where they are.

Every night of the year, from 10 PM to 4 AM, the Night Ministry Crisis/Counseling "Care Line" is available to anyone in any kind of need or distress. People call because they are lonely, anxious, depressed, worried, and for many other reasons. Our team of trained, volunteer Care Line Counselors provide compassionate and non-judgmental support to all who call.

During the same night-time hours, Night Ministers offer spiritual care and counseling to individuals on the streets of San Francisco and in bars, coffee shops, transportation centers, hotel lobbies, hospitals, and other places where people gather at night.

Each week, Night Ministry sponsors a variety of community programs, such as Open Cathedrals (two outdoor, ecumenical Christian worship services), Buddhist Meditation Group, and LGBTQA Sacred Space. Emerging programs include Open Shabbat and Yogic Movements.

With respect to our Open Cathedrals, we welcome volunteers donating a meal. A free meal follows both Open Cathedral - Civic Center, which meets every Sunday at 2 PM at Leavenworth and McAllister in San Francisco, and also Open Cathedral - Mission, which meets each Thursday evening at 5:30 PM at the 16th and Mission BART Station.

We also welcome day time volunteers in all areas -- social media, web development, finances, outreach, event support, and more. We can connect your gifts to our needs as you join our welcoming community.

All volunteer opportunities can be done from home.
