Non-profit Board Member (Friends of Library)
THE NEW FRIENDS OF THE BEAVERTON CITY LIBRARY
The New Friends of the Beaverton City Library (NFBCL) are looking for some individuals who would be willing to join our Board of Directors. Our organization supports and promotes library service in Beaverton, Oregon by providing the Beaverton City Library system with supplemental revenue for materials and services not covered by the library budget, as well as strengthening relations between the library and schools, local businesses, and other community organizations. We also promote public awareness of the many resources and services provided by the library.
Our Board members are responsible for overseeing the activities of our organization, which include community outreach, advocating for literacy programs, supporting the Beaverton City Library system financially, as well as liaison with the Beaverton Library Foundation and Beaverton Library Advisory Board. Board members are also involved in the oversight and operation of our primary fundraising channel: The Book Corner bookstore, and its in-store and on-line sales operations.
This is an interesting and rewarding activity for all of us currently on the Board. We meet monthly (via Zoom at this time), and if you are interested in potentially joining the board, we’d be glad to have you attend our next meeting. We are interested in candidates who love books, like supporting literacy and the library system, and have skills and backgrounds that will enhance our current roster. No prior non-profit board experience is required, but would be a plus.
Please contact our board president, Roger Tobin at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to know more.
About THE NEW FRIENDS OF THE BEAVERTON CITY LIBRARY
12470 SW 5TH ST, BEAVERTON, OR 97005, US
Our mission is to: - Cooperate with the library in expanding services to the community - Promote the development of library programs - Create and foster an appreciation of library services - Support and strengthen the library through monetary donations
The mission of the NFBCL has always revolved around community connections and fundraising support for the Library. Over the past several years, the Friends have donated $50,000 to the library each year as a result of store sales, online sales, and semiannual large book sales. The NFBCL is served by a volunteer Board of Directors some of which are also volunteers at our store The Book Corner.
Sales of community-donated books, movies and music CDs continue to be the Friends’ primary source of revenue. In 2013, the Friends began selling books and media online through Amazon. Sales grew quickly, and have the added benefit of reaching buyers for textbooks, specialty nonfiction and collectible books, which often do not sell at the bookstore. Library sales provide another outlet and reach a wide audience. Sales of community-donated books, movies and music CDs continue to be the Friends’ primary source of revenue.
