Building Nature Trails at Roberts Chapel Conservation Area

ORGANIZATION: TAR RIVER LAND CONSERVANCY

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
TRLC

Volunteers will work in teams to help build new hiking trails at Roberts Chapel Conservation Area, a 55-acre nature preserve owned by Tar River Land Conservancy (TRLC) near the towns of Butner and Stem in southern Granville County. The new trail network will lead visitors through a beautiful mature forest, past rocky outcroppings, and across several streams.

Each volunteer day will be led by a TRLC staff member or experienced trail-building volunteer. Trails will be constructed using hand-tools including loppers, hand saws, rakes, and shovels. Volunteers may assist in the construction of wooden footbridges and benches along the trail. Tools and safety equipment will be provided by TRLC. No previous experience needed. New volunteers will be paired with experienced volunteers who will provide training and support.

Our goals are to finish 1½ miles of trails by December 31st and to open the nature preserve to the public in spring 2021. Please donate a few hours to help us reach our goals. Once this nature preserve is opened to the public, visitors will have access to the trails year-round during daylight hours. Volunteers can look forward to returning to this property to enjoy the trails for years to come. Now more than ever, individuals and families need opportunities to hike in the woods to rejuvenate from the stresses of daily lives and to recreate outside at safe distances from others to limit transmission of COVID-19.

Volunteers will be required to follow safety protocols to limit participants exposure to the COVD-19 coronavirus. Volunteers must wear a mask covering your nose and mouth while working in close proximity to others during this event. Each person must maintain at least 6 feet distance from other participants (except for household family members) during the volunteer event. Volunteers will be encouraged to use hand sanitizer before and after the event. Volunteers will be asked to wipe down tools at the end of the day with cleaning supplies provided by TRLC. Volunteers will be separated into groups not larger than 10 individuals. Each group will be assigned to a separate section of trail to work on.
