Namaste Charter School is recruiting individuals to join its Board of Directors. The school is in its second year with a highly respected principal who will lead the community to a new period of growth and student success. This turning point presents the ideal opportunity to expand the school’s Board, an independent group that is responsible for the school’s effective governance and sustainability.
Board members care deeply about the school’s mission and service to the community; as such, Directors commit to serving as the school’s ambassadors and advocates across Chicago and beyond.
The Directors’ core responsibilities include: promote financial sustainability by approving a responsible annual budget and feasible fundraising targets; hire and evaluate the Executive Director; ensure legal and ethical adherence to applicable laws and Chicago Public Schools requirements; and ensure the school is meeting the aims of its charter by operating strong programs with academic excellence.
Directors are expected to contribute to the school’s financial success with a personally meaningful annual gift, by purchasing tickets to the school’s annual fundraising event(s), and by actively contributing to external fundraising efforts. However, financial capacity should not prevent interested and qualified individuals from inquiring, as the school is committed to recruiting and retaining engaged Directors who contribute in diverse ways.
Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion and Representation
Namaste aims for its Directors to bring unique perspectives to the organization and as such, strives for a Board that is diverse in areas including, but not limited to, age, gender, ethnicity, race, ability, professional industry, and neighborhood.
For the 2020 onboarding cycle, Namaste actively seeks to add Directors who reflect the lived experiences of its student and staff communities, with a particular focus on Black and Latinx individuals, Chicago residents from a variety of neighborhoods, and parent(s) and/or alumni of current and former traditional and charter Chicago public schools.
About Namaste Charter School
Namaste Charter School promotes curiosity and lifelong student success by implementing and sharing a holistic educational model for nearly 500 elementary and middle school students on Chicago’s near southwest side.
Founded in 2004, Namaste remains a national pioneer in promoting students’ health and wellness while delivering academic rigor in a safe and inclusive environment. Nearly 75% of Namaste students come from an under-resourced, low-income household and the proportion of students with special and diverse learning needs is nearly twice the city average.
As a Chicago public charter school, Namaste receives city and state funding for core operating expenses but raises private dollars for its unique programming, including an award-winning healthy meals program, daily Physical Education for all students, and a Spanish immersion instructional model.
Individuals who are interested in joining Namaste Charter School’s Board of Directors should email email@example.com to learn more about the opportunity.
