ORGANIZATION: RESULTS

Centuries of systemic racism, colonialism, and injustice have created a world where too many people struggle to meet their basic needs. And COVID-19 is making global poverty and inequality worse by the day.

"In only half a year, the coronavirus pandemic has wiped out decades of global development in everything from health to the economy" (Carmen Paun, Politico, 9/14/2020)

The World Bank estimates that COVID-19 could drive 100 million people into extreme poverty across the world. Children are at risk of losing $10 trillion in earnings over time due to pandemic-related school closures. And hunger is on the rise with food insecurity in lower-income countries expected to double this year to 265 million.

A global pandemic requires a global response. Unfortunately, the United States has failed to show up for our global neighbors at this critical time.

You can make a difference right now in the lives of millions of people around the world

RESULTS is a movement of passionate, committed, everyday people. Together we use our voices to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty.

RESULTS Volunteers:

  • Develop relationships with members of Congress so that when you get in touch, they listen
  • Meet face-to-face with members of Congress and their staff
  • Write persuasive opinion pieces and get published in the media
  • Join a movement of people committed to ending the systemic and structural injustices that drive poverty

The 2020 elections bring important new opportunities for influence

No matter who wins the election this year, the next Congress & presidential administration will play a critical role in shaping the future for the millions of people in the U.S. and across the world who experience poverty and inequality.

The first 100 days of a new Congress & presidential administration are an important time to influence priorities. Rather than wait to hear from the new Congress about theirs, RESULTS advocates will be proactively reaching out to decision makers and helping set the agenda, ensuring that issues of poverty are a priority for the next Congress.

By raising our voices together across the country, RESULTS advocates will use our own First 100 Days Advocacy Campaign to push Congress to make progress on both U.S. and global poverty issues like:

  • Securing safe, affordable housing for everyone in the United States
  • Closing the racial wealth divide
  • Making sure everyone, everywhere has access to lifesaving vaccines
  • Ending childhood malnutrition
  • Tackling some of the world’s biggest killers, like HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis

RESULTS is seeking new leaders to take action on our global poverty campaigns

RESULTS has volunteer groups in nearly every state across the country who will be influencing members of Congress during the RESULTS First 100 Days Advocacy Campaign. We are looking to build a more robust advocacy voice in your state. We are seeking a Global Poverty Advocate to represent your state in the RESULTS First 100 Days Advocacy Campaign.

During the First 100 Days Advocacy Campaign you will:

  • Meet at least one time with each of your Congressional offices
  • Regularly communicate with aides in each Congressional office by phone & email
  • Write and publish opinion pieces in media outlets across the state
  • Join regular training & coaching calls with other advocates from across the country participating in the program

Program Timeline: Mid-October 2020 - Mid-April 2021

  • We ask volunteers to commit to staying in action the full 6 months of the opportunity
  • Volunteers are welcome to stay involved as RESULTS advocates after the First 100 Days Advocacy Campaign is complete!

Estimated Time Commitment:

  • 6-9 hours / month October - January
  • 3-6 hours / month February - April

About RESULTS

Location:

1101 15th Street NW, Suite 1200, Washington, DC 20005, US

Mission Statement

RESULTS is a movement of passionate, committed everyday people. Together they use their voices to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty. Volunteers receive training, support, and inspiration to become skilled advocates. In time, volunteers learn to effectively advise policy makers, guiding them towards decisions that improve access to education, health, and economic opportunity. With every hour of their time, volunteers multiply their impact through the enormous power of advocacy -- whether it’s helping change policy to support millions of families putting food on the table or helping raise billions of dollars for the world’s most vulnerable children. Backed by the in-depth research and legislative expertise of staff, RESULTS advocates realize the incredible power they possess to use their voices to change the world.

Description

For over 40 years, RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund have been shining light on critical, effective solutions to poverty. By combining the powerful voices of civic advocates with research and oversight of U.S. anti-poverty efforts at home and abroad, RESULTS has been changing government priorities and people’s lives.

"I saw RESULTS on VolunteerMatch, but I wasn’t sure what advocacy was. Before that, I wasn’t really aware of the way different government policies impacted me. But RESULTS gave me a whole new perspective. I learned that if you want change, first you need to see what members of Congress are doing and build connections." - Yaseer Khanani

"I became an advocate because I wanted to be more involved in an organization that strives to make positive change. I really appreciate how genuine and dedicated everyone is to the RESULTS mission." - Sunjay Menon

"At RESULTS, we advocate for the issues that are close to my heart, like global health, education, and poverty eradication. I get to talk about issues that I witness throughout my professional and personal life. I can effect change by raising my voice." - Shabina Hussein
