Give the gift of literacy - become an online volunteer tutor!
The current environment of social distancing has changed the
way we teach whether it is one-on-one or in a class. We believe
distance learning is here to stay - even after things 'open up'.
Join us for online tutor training provided by a ProLiteracy-Certified
tutor trainer on Zoom and learn how to tutor someone learning English
as a second language.
No previous teaching or tutoring experience is required. And you
do NOT need to speak another language.
For more information contact Susan Bergstrom, Program Director, at 941-955-0421 or

Mission Statement
The Literacy Council of Sarasota Inc., a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 adult education organization, is building a more literate community by helping adults and families improve English language communications skills through personalized, needs-based tutoring and small group instruction.
Description
With the generous help of donors, we are able to provide these services:
-Workplace Literacy Program
-Basic Literacy Education
-English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
More than 2.6 million adults in Florida - or 20 percent of those 16 and older - lack even the most basic reading skills, according to estimates by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Since 1978, The Literacy Council Sarasota (LCS) has been helping adults (16 years of age and older) improve their basic reading, writing, comprehension and communication skills through one-on-one and small group tutoring. LCS customizes teaching to individual needs, providing a unique focus on enabling adult learners to function better within the frameworks of their own life situations.
Today, we continue our vital mission of building a more literate Sarasota, with the help of more than 250 volunteers and tutors who work with adult learners one-on-one at no cost. LCS has been nominated in 2008 and 2009 for the Frank G. Berlin, Sr. Small Business of the Year Awards presented by The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce in the Non-Profit Organization of the Year category. The Literacy Council of Sarasota's office is housed at the Glasser Schoenbaum Human Service Center in Sarasota, FL.
