Seeking Board Member with Nonprofit Finance Experience

Save to Favorites

The Woman's Friend Society

We are seeking a volunteer Board Member for nomination as Treasurer for one to two years. It is important that you have a solid foundation in nonprofit financial management and can help educate our board and work with our paid bookkeeper to manage the finances of the organization and work with our Executive Director, President and endowment administrator to ensure the financial health of our organization for the long term. We prefer a person local to the Salem Massachusetts area. We are currently meeting via Zoom for Board Meetings, however our office is open using all COVID-19 guidelines from both the CDC and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

If you are interested in supporting local affordable housing for women then this is a great opportunity.

About The Woman's Friend Society

12 Hawthorne Blvd, Salem, MA 01970, US

Mission Statement

Our mission in this regard is: "To provide safe, affordable living at Emmerton House to single women of any nationality or class, working or student, and encourage habits of industry and self-reliance". At present there are 21 women living at Emmerton House. According to the Community Preservation Plan, diversity in housing is needed. This is especially true of affordable housing. The housing provided by the Society is an important, even if small, benefit to the city.

The Woman’s Friend Society has been a positive and often pioneering force in the charitable life of Salem, Massachusetts, since the society’s founding in 1876. Examples of our charitable contribution abound. Some of the more noteworthy include being the first organization to provide sewing lessons to immigrant women to enable them to become gainfully employed. Recognizing the health needs of Salem’s low-income population, the Society provided the first Visiting Nursing services in the city. The first Kindergarten was provided at Emmerton House, an idea later picked up and implemented by the Salem Public Schools. The Mack Industrial School had its beginnings with the Society. Today our contributions include providing affordable housing for women who are single, working, or students.
