We have GROWN from our original ministries with homeless services on our site (now independent, but still present)
to very active Food Distribution, and now we're going to hosting virtual and socially-distanced essential services (voting) events. We continue with faith-based expansion to offer welcome and acceptance, period.
We need someone who believes that - getting the word out on social media and occasionally updating our website when our regular leadership team is inundated -
is an essential service in our times for our faith-based work to bring/seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God.
Our goal is to build relationships more for the sake of connecting people with God and one another (and the Good News that they are beloved by the Creator of the Universe) - as well as to give people hope, even if they are not currently seeking a spiritual relationship. Several of our connecting opportunities do not allow us to speak of our faith, but only to show it in actions. This is what we need to grow - showing our faith, while inviting others to participate in its celebration when they are ready.
We are an inviting, welcoming, inclusive community of faith, and we are crossing language and social "barriers" with new bridges, including, but not limited to:
* food distribution - currently weekly through end of 2020 (may move to 2x/mo in 2021 unless we get grant for staff support) in one of the poorest communities in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles;
* Eclectic and inclusive (ELCA Lutheran-Christian rooted) worship in both English and Spanish (bilingual worship 2x/mo) - on Zoom, currently posted afterward on Facebook and YouTube and Vimeo, and coming soon, streaming through Boxcast to broadcast on multiple platforms from our Zoom worship base.
* Community Garden space and education - looking to expand these in multiple languages in 2021
* Spiritual Experience Laboratory (SXLab) for young adults, particularly addressing needs of people of color, Black and indigenous folk - launching in mid-November
* Outdoor worship as weather cools
* Blessing Animals in October
* Services offered cooperatively at our site for pet food/medicines, Spay/neuter + microchipping, and feral cat spay/neuter to help support our total community of creation, more than just the people.
We are flexible about timing for social media postings, within limits (i.e., if we send you info, it's usually got a couple of days before you need to create or lift graphics/photos and get it posted).
We need someone who understands how to BOOST our posts in social media for limited $ and maximum impact.
We also would like creative input on how we can do better what we are already doing.
The Holy Spirit is doing something special in our community - both locally in the poor section of Van Nuys and more broadly in the social justice minded community online!
We are committed to providing BRAVE space (because we cannot promise Safe Space in the fluid environment our world exists in today, but we can bravely support each other and offer welcome and acceptance) to help connect people coming from a variety of experiences and perspectives.
We hope you hear the call and want to help!

CENTRAL: A small, energetic community working in English + bilingually to empower our neighbors in Van Nuys through love and grace to be who God has made them to be.
Our vision: We want to be people who accept and live in God's grace, who follow Jesus Christ, and who serve others.
January 1929 Central was a mission outreach & became a vital part of serving a wide range of needs through the depression and post-war Van Nuys. It flourished in the 50's-70's but lost its connection with mission, so dwindled.
NOW, for 15 years, hosted homeless services agencies & opened worship to marginalized folk, experiencing loneliness, disconnectedness, & personal trauma.
TODAY: Core of folks serve both persons experiencing poverty & hunger among the housed neighbors + persons experiencing homelessness.
