In-person tutor for 15-year-old refugee youth in Allegan

Save to Favorites

Bethany Christian Services

We are looking for an in-person tutor willing to work with this 15-year-old refugee youth from Myanmar who is living in a foster home in Allegan. Due to the family's poor internet access, they really need a volunteer willing to go to their home to tutor this youth. He especially needs support with English reading & comprehension, and speaking. His English skills are still far below grade level, and tutoring will help him to retain what has already been learned and to continue learning and keeping up during the school year.

This opportunity would be for a minimum of the fall semester or the full 2020-2021 school year if possible. The tutor would be asked to meet with the student on a weekly basis for at least one hour.

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
