A Place Called Home

Project: APCH Program Supply Delivery Prep Days

A Place Called Home (APCH) Programming Overview: In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, A Place Called Home has shifted our formerly in-person youth programming to the virtual realm. To ensure our youth members have the tools they need to fully participate in our programs remotely, we are compiling and delivering program supply kits to their homes. This is where our wonderful APCH volunteers come in!

Project Description: This project takes place on campus at A Place Called Home. Volunteers sort, label and organize program supplies in preparation for delivery to APCH youth members. This ensures our members have the supplies and tools they need to learn and create from home as they remain connected virtually with APCH. This project includes standing, movement and light lifting. The APCH team guides volunteers throughout the project.

About A Place Called Home

Location:

2830 South Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90011, US

Mission Statement

A Place Called Home provides a safe, nurturing environment with proven programs in arts, education and wellness for the young people in South Central Los Angeles to help them improve their economic conditions and develop healthy, fulfilling and purposeful lives.

Description

A Place Called Home first swung open its doors in 1993 - a year after the LA Unrest, amidst a crime epidemic that rendered the streets of South Central unsafe for children of any age. APCH’s mission was simple, but wrought with challenges: to provide the gang affected youth of South Los Angeles with a safe haven away from the life threatening dangers and temptations of the streets.

APCH became a refuge for our members, a safe place where teens could relax, do homework, and hang out with friends. It was a place to be accepted and to be a kid. What started with a dozen youngsters on the first day quickly grew to hundreds.

Over the past 27 years, a dynamic youth and community center has evolved from those humble beginnings. Today, APCH delivers a replete array of services to youth ages eight to mid-twenties and their families, empowering and inspiring them to self-reliance and ownership of their own lives. Every day we serve hundreds of young people and their families with educational and artistic programs, counseling, mentorship and pathways to a bright future. At our core, we are still a place where young people who face tremendous challenges can experience the joy, laughter and safety that should be a part of every childhood.
