Volunteer to pack food and love! Sign up for a one-hour time slot to help make the beginning of the school year a great one by ensuring no child in our community has to face hunger over the weekends. Volunteers will work in shifts to assemble over 400 food sacks that will then be distributed to kids at risk of food insecurity at five Portland public schools. Social distancing and safety measures are in place, all ages welcome!

Mission Statement
Portland Backpack serves children who are at risk of hunger by providing food sacks for weekend days when food scarcity is higher. We believe that engaging the community in our efforts creates a greater impact that reaches beyond reducing hunger.
Description
Since 2008, Portland Backpack has distributed 100,000+ nutritious weekend food sacks (and now with COVID, gift cards) to children who rely on school meals for food. Our food sacks contain meal items for the weekend that can be prepared by kids, are nutritious, and taste good. We work with all members of our community to help make sure no kid has to face hunger any day of the week. Along with the food sacks and gift cards, each kid receives a care card: a note or drawing with a positive message to show the child their community is looking out for them. We have grown since 2008 and now serve students who attend five Portland public elementary schools: Martin Luther King Jr., Rigler, Rosa Parks, Scott, and Woodlawn.
