Use your passion for exercise and your friendly personality to support people on their journey to long-term sobriety. As a Strides in Recovery assistant coach / mentor, you will walk, jog or run with small groups of the newly sober who are receiving treatment at a residential program in Pasadena.

You do NOT need to be a serious runner, yet. You do need to be capable of walking/jogging 3-4 miles while being a good listener and engaging in supportive conversation. As trainining contiues, you need to be willing to increase your distance. This team is training for a half marathon in January.

Exercise, and especially exercise done toward a goal and with a team, has been clinically proven to promote the mindset needed to stay sober and reduce the risk of relapse. Training for this role will include an overview of the causes and treatment for addiction, with an emphasis on the physical, emotional, and mental health benefits of exercise in early recovery.

The first-year post-addiction treatment relapse rate is 40-60%, and since the pandemic, the number of overdose deaths has been climbing. You will be part of bringing those numbers down! Together, we will support recovery. Together, we will change lives.

This team meets on Tuesdays 5:30-7:00 pm

Mission Statement

Bringing the healing power of exercise to addiction recovery communities.

Description

Strides in Recovery is a Los Angeles based nonprofit dedicated to helping people overcome addiction. Working collaboratively with addiction treatment providers and other recovery communities, we lead goal-oriented group running and walking programs for people with substance use disorders. Our recovery-focused messaging promotes mental, emotional and physical healing, while reinforcing the life skills and mindset needed to support long term sobriety. Our camaraderie, support, and warmth offer a sense of community and belonging to all.

Here's what some of our participants have said about their experience:

"I run with the team because it makes me feel like I'm part of something special. It taught me how to keep pushing forward and not give up."
-Noah M.

"Training taught me to keep going and hold on even when I don't want to."
-Jillian C.

"It was a great experience showing me that I could change in recovery. At first it was hard to go even a small distance. But, by the end of the training, I was much stronger and could go the distance. I can go the distance in recovery too."
-Stan R

"Training showed me that this isn't going to be easy and that life isn't always going to be easy either. Sometimes you have to push through the tough times and stay on the right path. You'll eventually get to your destination."
Amy P

"Being part of this team makes me feel like I have a family again."
