We are seeking a male volunteer to mentor a 17-year-old male refugee youth from Eritrea. This youth arrived into Bethany's program in April of 2019 and he lived in a residential group homes. He moved into a foster home in Grand Haven in January of 2020, and he recently moved to a foster home in Grand Rapids (Feb. 2021). His native languages are Tigrinya and Saho. This youth identifies as Muslim. His case manager shared, "This youth has adapted well to our program and participates in all activities. He likes to play soccer, basketball, and is open to any activity. He has had enormous English language skill gains in the last year. He states that school is important to him and that he enjoys attending. The youth reports that he had little schooling abroad and is working to catch up to his same-aged peers."
This youth fled Eritrea when he was 12 years old. It is unsafe for him to return due to lack of familial relationships, history of physical abuse, as well as continued violence in Eritrea.

Description
For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.
Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
