We are looking for a male volunteer to mentor an 18-year-old from Ghana who has been in Bethany's refugee foster care program for almost two years. He fled Ghana due to abuse perpetrated by his mother, step-father, and peers. He was sent to Ecuador where he traveled north and crossed the southern U.S. border.
Current: This youth lives in an independent living placement with another Bethany client. He stopped attending a local public school in August of 2019 and enrolled in an online high school program. He is doing well and is college-bound if he can stay motivated. He is currently employed as a resident aide at a local assisted living center. He loves to box, and he dreams of being a professional boxer. This youth is is very dependent and agreeable, sometimes to a fault. He is learning crucial independent living skills, but he often needs others to help or do things for him. This youth asked to be matched with another agency identified mentor after his last mentor’s one-year commitment ended.

Description
For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.
Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
