We are looking for a male volunteer to mentor an 18-year-old male youth from Afghanistan. He has been in Bethany's program since June of 2019, and in an independent living apartment on the southwest side of Grand Rapids. He is a 10th grader at a local public high school, and he has excellent English language abilities. In his mentoring survey he shared that he is talkative, prefers going out to staying home, and enjoys movies, playing futsal/soccer, eating out, hanging out with friends, exploring nature, and skiing. He is interested in pursuing a career in political science or law because he is "good at politics and I know a lot about it. I want to advocate for refugees." He asked that his mentor be a few years older than him, and for mentoring activities he would like to explore the city, learn new skills, do outdoor activities, play sports, watch movies, go to concerts or plays, and look for college/job information.

Mission Statement
Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.
Description
For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.
Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
