Do you love working with people? Are you looking for a long term volunteer commitment? If yes, then our CORE Mentorship opportunity is for you!
Black and Latinx Americans have been disproportionately affected by COVID, especially here in South Los Angeles. Many South LA families were already economically vulnerable before the pandemic. But furloughs, reductions in wages and hours, and lack of access to educational resources for their children have increased their financial and emotional strain. Many are now at risk of slipping from poverty to extreme poverty or homelessness.
To respond to these challenges, the COVID Retraining & Recovery (CORE) Fund-an educational and career-building initiative is providing 200 Scholarships to South Los Angeles residents who have been furloughed, laid-off, or work hours reduced by 50% to retrain in the health care or technology fields.
Leverage your interpersonal skills, career experience, and network to provide meaningful support to our CORE Scholars. Through this mentorship experience, you will help people through their academic program and into a new career.
Your help can advance the lives of our CORE Scholars who are pursuing vocational degrees in healthcare and technology by helping them prepare for and find job placements to help transform their lives.
SoLa I Can matches you with a compatible South Los Angeles Scholar to take under your wing for 1 year and provide ongoing mentorship, career coaching, and support.
SoLa I CAN Foundation is built on a simple premise, "If you can’t see it, you can’t be it." I CAN’s goal is to end generational poverty and housing insecurity by providing programming, mentorship, and a sense of community resulting in increased academic performance, inspired positive identity development, college acceptance, and graduation.
Our goal is to introduce South LA youth to people, places, and opportunities they would not normally or easily have access to in their daily lives, all at no cost to them. We believe that by doing this, it will help break the intergenerational cycle of poverty, unlock their full potential, and develop youth into morally grounded, academically accomplished leaders. Our four program areas are: College Readiness and Access, Financial Literacy, Career Awareness, and Wellness and New Horizons. Career Awareness : South LA youth are exposed to diverse professions giving them free first-hand career experience. Annual SoLa Scholarship : SoLa Impact and it’s affiliated non-profit, The I Can Foundation, awards scholarships to SoLa tenants and residents of South LA annually. Free Virtual Programming: SoLa I Can is offering free virtual programming to students affected by the school closure. Check out our website for more info! Tech and E-Sports Center: SoLa Impact and the SoLa I CAN Foundation will open a Technology and E-Sports Development Center at The Beehive in South LA in December 2020. The Tech Center will be free to the public and offer music production, video production, coding, graphic design, e-sports, software training classes, and much more!
