ORGANIZATION: STS FOUNDATION Indiana

STS Foundation is looking for volunteers that would be host families. Hosting means you open your heart and home to a teenager from another country. You provide the same loving, caring environment for them as you do a member of your own family. We accept many types of families: single parent families, families with children of any age, childless families, and families with grown children.

The host family is responsible for providing three meals a day, registering the student in school, a separate bed and a quiet place to study. The student pays their own expenses other than food and transportation.

The focus of this program is to have host families and students learn from each other, e.g., culture, customs, regional expressions, and daily lives. Your family gains a new family member. The relationship that evolves throughout your year as a host parent will last a lifetime.

Mission Statement

To facilitate educational opportunities where all participants can break down cultural barriers, and gain respect and understanding of each other’s way of life.

Description

For over 30 years, STS Foundation has facilitated the relationships that form when a host family welcomes a cultural exchange student into their homes and their hearts. Developing cross-cultural relationships promotes understanding, perspective, and empathy between nations. This fosters good-will and respect when each culture meets the people of another culture, looking into their eyes and seeing the humanity we all possess.

STS Foundation has helped thousands of students prepare for the work force. Their understanding of not only the English language, but the cultures, habits, and etiquette of our country, makes them more relevant in the world of international business. They also develop skills such as self-confidence, and the ability to successfully push themselves outside of their familiar comfort zone.

STS Foundation has helped thousands of families provide an excellent cultural education unlike any other for their children and themselves. As they get to know their chosen student, they learn how others live their lives, how other countries educate their children, the dynamics of living in a different country, and often the food of another country. They teach their family about looking beyond ourselves, to actively reach out and help others. They learn the meaning of the quote from Mandy Hale, "There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others."
