English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutor for adults. Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring for non-native English speaking adults who need to improve their speaking, reading, and writing skills to function effectively in society.
COVID-19 has not stopped us. We have adapted. Most tutoring is now conducted online. Tutoring, Coaching, Connecting -- while building confidence and competence in the English language -- it's what we do.
The South Bay Literacy Council is still tutoring despite the restrictions of COVID-19. We are determined to make online learning work. Before COVID most of our tutoring was in-person in small groups. Now, we are online with some small groups, but many one-on-one tutoring options. Our volunteer tutors are using a variety of platforms for classes, but Zoom is the most popular. Classes are structured around the student's goals--we do not have a set curriculum.
Most of our students live in the Pacific Time Zone. Volunteer tutors will need to adjust to West Coast time.

Because we believe literacy is life-changing and empowering, we volunteer to teach adults to read, write, and speak English for free.
The South Bay Literacy Council (SBLC) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to teaching adults over 18 to read, write and speak English.
For more than 36 years, SBLC has provided group and individual tutoring in Torrance, Hawthorne, Gardena, Wilmington and other South Bay-Los Angeles communities.
Our training workshops equip tutors to serve in one of three programs:
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Computer-aided Literacy (CAL)
Literacy for English Speakers (LES)
Headquartered in Torrance, the organization is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America. We are staffed and operated entirely by volunteers. The council relies solely on private sector donations and receives no government funding.
There is an urgent, ongoing need for more trained volunteers for tutoring and for management support. Be part of the solution and make a real difference in someone's life.
