Project: A Place Called Home "Family Resource Depot"

A Place Called Home (APCH) "Family Resource Depot" Overview: A Place Called Home has served South Central youth and families with its life-changing programs for 30 years.

In 2020, in the face of the coronavirus emergency, APCH quickly mobilized to respond to the urgent and ongoing needs of youth and families in our community who were already struggling with poverty and food insecurity.

Among other initiatives, we launched the Family Resource Depot, or "FRD", to provide groceries, hygiene products and other household necessities to our families in need on a weekly basis.

As of January 2023, APCH has provided more than 800,000 meals for families in need through our FRD initiative.

As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, families within our community continue to experience financial struggles and food insecurity. APCH remains committed to continue to provide fresh produce and other essentials for our families every week.

This is where our wonderful APCH volunteers come in!

Project Description: Volunteers sort and pack fresh produce and dry/canned food to create grocery bags for families from the APCH community. The APCH team guides volunteers throughout the project. This is an active project that may include light-heavy lifting, bending and extended periods of standing. Please let the APCH team know if there is anything we can do to make the project more comfortable for you.

About A Place Called Home

Location:

2830 South Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90011, US

Mission Statement

A Place Called Home provides a safe, nurturing environment with proven programs in arts, education and wellness for the young people in South Central Los Angeles to help them improve their economic conditions and develop healthy, fulfilling and purposeful lives.

Description

A Place Called Home first swung open its doors in 1993 - a year after the LA Unrest, amidst a crime epidemic that rendered the streets of South Central unsafe for its children of any age. APCH’s mission was simple, but wrought with challenges: to provide gang-affected youth of South Los Angeles with a safe haven away from the life-threatening dangers and temptations of the streets.

Since then, a dynamic, multi-service youth and community center has evolved and grown on the corner of South Central Ave and 29th Street. For 30 years, A Place Called Home has been serving South Central youth ages eight to mid-twenties and their families through education and arts programs, mental health counseling, mentorship, job readiness, college scholarships, civic engagement, and more. At our core, we are still a place where young people who face tremendous challenges can experience the safety, joy, and opportunity that should be a part of every childhood.
