Internship Overview

RiseUp Malawi is seeking an all-star intern for Fall 2020 to work out of a home office one-on-one with the director. Our internship opportunity will provide students or anyone looking to get into the nonprofit field with a hands on experience of what it’s like to work in the international non-profit marketplace.

Specifically, RiseUp Malawi supports capacity building for a small rural community in southern Malawi through youth education initiatives. It's programs are guided by asset based community development strategies that equip at-risk youth to go out on their own and create a future of self-reliance for themselves and their communities.

This internship program will show students how a start-up non-profit is run, the daily tasks that go into managing donors, developing and implementing fundraising strategies, working with fundraising software and planning for fundraising events. Interns will help out with brainstorming, necessary organizational and administrative tasks, social media, press releases, donor e-mails, & website copy. This internship offers a unique and comprehensive look at how an international non-profit is run from the inside out and as an intern you will work side by side with the CEO’s of both organizations. We take the future interest of all our interns into consideration- at the end of the internship it is our hope that we will have equipped you with the necessary foundational knowledge to feel confident in going out and starting your own 501(c)3 or in pursuing higher education in the non-profit sector.

About RiseUp Malawi

For 5 years, RiseUp Malawi has supported at-risk youth in the rural community of Mangochi, Malawi. The majority of people in this community live below the $2/day poverty line, and everyday their children face unfathomable challenges: hunger, malnourishment, disease, child marriages and deep despair. As a result of these challenges, many children are forced to drop out of school at a young age, creating a cycle of poverty that carries over from generation to generation.

Our mission at RiseUp Malawi is to break this never-ending cycle of poverty with education-specific intervention strategies that empower the younger generation through education. We currently operate four programs: a free, after-school Youth Entrepreneurship Program where youth can learn computer skills and improve literacy, a Secondary School Scholarship Program, a music program where youth can explore stigmatized social issues through song, dance & poetry, a farming training program for the parents of the students in our programs and our newly launched partnership program through which our supporters can partner one-to-one with a child in the long-term. We work closely with community leaders and village elders to ensure our programs remain culturally sensitive and that we are addressing the real needs of the community. Through regular communication with village leaders, we have found a system where we can provide a hand UP, instead of a hand out. Our end goal is to build self-reliance, not dependence.

***RiseUp Malawi has been at the forefront of COVID19 prevention efforts in Malawi. The majority of our projects and fundraising for the remainder of 2020 will be focused on the continued protection and health of our community.
