Level Up is an after-school program where youth create their future with the support of mentors in a playful, creative community. Participating youth set their own goals for the program and engage with consistent mentors for social-emotional growth and the pursuit of creative aspirations.

Level Up volunteers are known as Mentors and work with a consistent group of 2-3 elementary school students at our Level Up programs. You'll hang out and support students as they work on projects like writing a newspaper article or creating a legend. You don't need to be an expert to be a mentor! However, we welcome our Mentors to add their passions and wisdom to the program.

Volunteer at Audubon Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.
Volunteer at Holmes Wednesdays and/or Fridays.

Fall project: The Newspaper Club produces a student-led newspaper published twice each year. Mentors support students as they investigate topics of their choosing and contribute works ranging from opinion polls, short comics, stories, interviews, and more. Mentors of all backgrounds are invited to support students through the production process. Will you join our press room and help us uncover this year's biggest scoop?

Winter project: Visual arts! Youth become storytellers, creating characters, worlds, and storylines, and bringing them to life through comics, animation, and other forms of self-expression. Mentors use their powers of listening, ideation, and imagination to support students through their creative process (such as developing the characters' backgrounds, drawing them out, or writing up details about their world). Will you join us in our journey to bring these youths' imaginations to life?

Spring project: Summer preview! What's happening around town? Stay tuned for more details.

Time commitment:
Mentors are expected at either cohort from at least 3-5 PM and can choose to volunteer between Tuesdays & Thursdays or Wednesdays & Fridays each week. Two days with either (or each!) cohort is preferred. If you can only do one day a week, we could still use your help! This program runs October to June. A consistent presence is important to build relationships with the kids, but we understand if things come up occasionally!

About Spark Central

Location:

1214 W Summit Parkway, SPOKANE, WA 99201, US

Mission Statement

Igniting the creativity, innovation, and imagination necessary for people to forge the path to their best future.

Description

Welcome aboard!

Spark Central is a creative learning center where people of all ages can access our high-speed Internet (1,000 Mbps), technology, rich and imaginative programming, and curated book and media collection. Building on the West Central neighborhood's rail yard roots, Spark Central is at the junction between where people are, and where they want to go. We offer resources, connection, support, and learning to those who need it most on their journey to a better future.

We foster creativity for adults, teens, and kids by providing learning experiences that explore the unlikely intersections between subjects, such as poetry and science or coding and character creation. Such experiences stretch the imagination, are the root of innovation, and develop the ability to problem-solve and think critically-skills essential to success in the Information Age, where the jobs of tomorrow haven’t been created yet. From learning to code to learning to write a story, we offer community members a one-way ticket to discovering their passion, building new skills, and growing the confidence needed for wherever they want to go.

Thanks to many generous donors, we are able to offer access to our resources and many of our programs at no charge and keep adult workshops affordable. Kids programs are always available at no cost because we believe that all children, regardless of income, deserve the chance to be imaginative, to play, and to find their inner genius.
