Microbiologist for The Universal Citizen Protection Device (UCPD) Project
PROJECT SUMMARY The Universal Citizen Protection Device (UCPD) is a UV based filter less PPE concept that aims to protect an individual’s eyes, nose, and mouth with 99%+ reliability, and without the need for fit testing. The UCPD is a lightweight helmet, with a battery pack to power a small fan and the concealed UV Chamber, which decontaminates all air going through it. This will be a 100% reusable device that costs less than $100 to manufacture, can be worn comfortably for 8 hours, and uses globally available, low-demand components.
UCPD is an open source project focused on social impact. We are working towards making this device available globally, at the lowest cost possible, as quickly as possible. The team will test and refine the design of the UV Chamber and the UCPD to the point where it is ready for manufactures globally. Progress so far has been promising. We are currently prototyping and testing the UV Chamber. We will then test it against a surrogate virus at a National Lab in the US that has offered to help.
VOLUNTEER POSITION DESCRIPTION & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES We are starting to prototype our UV Chamber and are looking for an expert to help us demonstrate the virus deactivation efficacy of the Chamber. We are looking for someone who can help us design the test plan and help us execute it in collaboration with a National Lab that we are working with.
SKILLS Microbiologists, Virus, UV, Laboratory Techniques, Molecular Biology, Virology, Clinical Research REQUIREMENTS
BS Microbiology Experience with designing tests for virus efficacy is preferred TIME REQUIREMENT Flexible; 5 hours per week

Mission Statement

Helpful Engineering is an international, open source community incubator focused on mobilizing people to help solve the Covid-19 pandemic and other critical issues. With thousands of volunteers worldwide, we support projects through innovations in engineering, community resources, software, and manufacturing.

Description

Helpful Engineering is a 3,400 strong volunteer-run nonprofit incubator organization, with engineers, scientists, and doctors around the world dedicated to helping the world address the COVID-19 pandemic. Relying on the resourcefulness and grit of our members, we work to design innovative ways to fight the virus that causes this disease. We have partnered with medical professionals to know what would help them the most in this crisis, rapidly trying to design and arrange the production of pragmatic devices to move life-saving air, extend existing tools, or organize volunteers on the ground to bolster medical workers. The need is critical. Important but complex rules usually make these products unavailable, if unburdened, we can make them available now.
