[Even in this virtual world and virtual volunteering opportunity, we would prefer to find someone in Central Indiana/Indianapolis...But you can convince us that doesn't matter...]

Changing Footprints is an 18 year old Indiana non-profit (find us at www.changingfootprints.org). We are 100% volunteer, "green" to our roots, and want to change the world (or at least, Central Indiana). And we need someone to help connect us to everyone in Indianapolis.

When you have shoes of any kind, in great, good, or poor condition, what do you do with them. Some people throw them in the trash. Some people give them to Goodwill, where they are sold for pennies on the dollar and shipped overseas. If they are the right type of shoes (tennis, crocs, sandals), they end up where people need them. If they are the wrong type of shoe (women's heels, snow boots, football shoes, they travel half way around the world only to be thrown away.

Wouldn't it be GREAT if there were an organization in your town that worked with over 200 groups and organizations, and had a use for EVERY type of shoe to be redistributed and worn again? The stilettos went to organizations that put on free proms, the baseball shoes to a program called RBI (revive baseball in the innercity), the crocs, flip flops, and hiking boots to various parts of Haiti (including the mountains). This organization would also send the unacceptable shoes to Nike Grind, to be turned into playground material, send 10% overseas (of the right kind), 15% to disaster relief in the US (Kentucky tornados, for example), and 75% to organizations in their own town, to help... the homeless... domestic abuse shelters...ex-offender programs ... addiction programs...

This program would be called Changing Footprints, and would spend $0 on paid staff. It has saved 512,000 pairs of shoes from the landfill, and redistributed 95% of them for re-use. But we could double that...if more people knew about us. Our only problem? We're so busy collecting and distributing shoes, we're lousy at publicity and social media.

We need someone special. We need someone to help spread the word. Contact green organizations. Contact recycling organizations. Contact social justice organizations. Tweet, post stories on instagram, be a social media maven. Be the FACE of IndyRecycle and whatever you (or you-and-your-friends) dream up, you can do. You've always wanted to make a difference in the world; here's your chance.

About Changing Footprints

Mission Statement

Changing Footprints realizes the great need for shoes around the world as protection from diseases and a gateway to education. Because of that need we collect new and gently used shoes for distribution to homeless, disaster-stricken, or underprivileged people locally, nationally, and internationally regardless of race, religion, gender, or ethnicity.

Description

Changing Footprints collects used shoes from a variety of sources: collection bins at shoe stores and churches, shoe drives by schools, churches, civic and governmental agencies, and donations of customer returns by shoe companies. We sort, classify by type, and quality check, and then provide the right type of shoes at no charge to agencies, individuals, and organizations who put them on the feet of those in need. We are a 100% volunteer organization with no paid staff and provide 15,000 pair of shoes per year to those in need, locally, in the US, and to international destinations. This diverts shoes otherwise destined for landfills to a important cause, educates our youth that they can make a personal difference, helps those in need, as well as those that volunteer their time, effort, and ideas. We are a flat organization that supports any volunteer with an idea they would like to try - in the words of our youth, "it's all good".
