Help seniors get healthy meals and groceries on Saturdays!

You can help an older adult to live independently at home and still get nutritious food by volunteering for a few hours on Saturday. We are in need of volunteers in neighborhoods around the greater Pittsburgh area to deliver prepared meals and groceries from Troy Hill to elderly neighbors in need until September 30.

Volunteers pick up their deliveries on Saturday mornings and can deliver to one or several senior households in Pittsburgh. You can volunteer once a week or once a month and spend a half hour or a few hours delivering much needed groceries and supplies to those that can't shop for themselves. Volunteers can choose what neighborhoods they'll deliver to or be assigned those most in need. We also have opportunities to deliver from local food pantries or to help with curbside pickups at grocery stores across the county.

In Service of Seniors is a program from Wesley Family Services and our partner, The United Way. We've been supporting seniors for nearly 40 years and are adapting to the current needs of older adults in Allegheny County. When it is safe to do so, we will resume all of our normal services.

This volunteer position is only open to residents of Pennsylvania.

All volunteers must complete the PA Criminal History clearance (PATCH)
, which is free for volunteers. We are not able to accept volunteers who do not have a recent background check.

Mission Statement

In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh (ISOS) and Open Your Heart to a Senior in Westmoreland County are programs of Wesley Family Services with a mission to maximize the independence of older adults in Allegheny County and Westmoreland County through practical volunteer-based supports.

Description

In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh and Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) are part of an initiative of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Seniors who need some extra support to live independently at home and feel connected to their community are matched with volunteers in their neighborhood.

Volunteers are able to have flexible/self-service scheduling which allows volunteers to view and select activities that they would like to do. Some of the activities available are grocery shopping for or with an older adult, providing rides to appointments, friendly visiting, helping a senior with low vision read their mail, and more! Some of our opportunities are suspended at this time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please contact us for a current list of available opportunities.

In Allegheny County, we also offer Medicare counseling through our APPRISE program and home safety checks for seniors through the Safety for Seniors program.
