We are an after-school tutoring program. Our children come on different times depending on which school they attend.
We are looking for people who are willing to commit one day a week to help with snack preparation and cleaning after tutoring, as well as being on hand to help our tutors when there is a need. It is best if each person came on a particular day each week.
We are adding this group of volunteers due to the COVID-19 outbreak to help us keep our space a safe place for tutors, students and all volunteers.

Mission Statement
Connecting elementary school children with caring and dedicated tutors, our one-on-one tutoring program enhances literacy, fosters creativity, and supplements classroom learning in the South End of Albany. Reading is essential *** One-on-one tutoring works *** Every child has worth
Description
After tutoring within a nearby elementary school for several years, a number of us decided to do more and started an after-school tutoring program located about a block east of the elementary school 3 1/2 years ago. The school is located in a low-income neighborhood and the only 13% of the children in the 3rd - 6th grade read on grade level.
Starting our program with 1st and 2nd graders, and remaining with them through their elementary years, it is the hope to have all our students reading on grade level by the end of third grade. This gives them a chance to be successful students when they reach middle school.
We work with the students to improve reading, writing and problem solving skills. The five components of reading are stressed - phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We publish an anthology of the students' writing at the end of each year. And there is a STEM problem with no "right" answer to challenge their creativity each month.
We have had a two of our students moved into the elementary school's Young Scholars Program.
We are looking for tutors who will be committed to working with the same student for at least one school year. We also need board members and a webmaster.
