A Cantonese/English translator is needed for Second Harvest’s Lincoln Community Center. The translator will provide translation skills to help clients with questions, extra assistance, registration, and client expectations. This service is very important since it helps give our clients the best experience by being able to communicate their needs in their preferred language.

The translator is responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with Second Harvest staff, employees and volunteers at host site, and the clients we serve
  • Creating an efficient yet warm and welcoming environment for volunteers and clients
  • Working with people of all different backgrounds and nationalities while exhibiting compassion, humility and sensitivity
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of all client and volunteer information
  • Answering questions, providing extra assistance and communication to clients expectation of distribution

This is a unique distribution site since it is located in Daly City and all clients walk to get their food. You would be helping communicate to the clients about our logistical needs around accessing food plus COVID safety requirements. You would enforce our rules in a nice way and help clients understand COVID compliance. Safety is our number one goal so you would be play an essential role at the the distribution.

Everyone should have access to healthy food. Second Harvest provides nutritious groceries and fresh produce at distribution sites throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. These sites are volunteer-run and rely on committed, dedicated volunteers who can support the effort on an ongoing basis. We invite you to lead our community in ensuring that anyone who needs a healthy meal can get one.

This volunteer opportunity might be for you if:

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You can make a 1 month commitment with hopefully continued support
  • You have the ability to perform with a high standard of customer service, professional conduct and responsibility
  • You are friendly, patient and eager to work with clients and volunteers of diverse backgrounds
  • You are detail-oriented
  • You have the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • You enjoy working in a fast pace environment with many moving parts
  • You have experience responding to issues quickly
  • Are comfortable using email and/or a smartphone

Helpful background:

  • Experience working for a non-profit or representing another organization as a volunteer
  • Experience working with low-income families and individuals
  • Bilingual in English/Cantonese
