Since the pandemic is still happening around the country, we offer a Free Online After School Tutoring Service for K-8 students and SAT/ACT preparation for high school students from Monday to Thursday, between 6:30-7:30 PM (Central Time).

Description of our Online After-School Tutoring Service Program:

Our center, Enlightened Buddha Temple (EBT), offers a free Online After-School Program for K-8 students to learn, grow, have fun, and stay safe in a caring environment, including an academic and personal developments through tutoring service and creating mindful activities. To excel students’ academic success, we assist K-8 students in doing their homework in all subjects such as Math, Science, Reading, and Writing, as well as preparing for Texas Academic State Standard tests. Besides, our center offers mindfulness practices for them in a few minutes of breath meditation and body scan to relax their body and mind after a hectic and tiresome day of learning at school. These mindful practice’s goal is to assist them to regulate their attention, emotion and behaviors. As a result, they could perform better in school, reduce discipline problems, and strengthen their resilience to deal with stress and anxiety.

Program Goals:

Help K-8 students achieve academic success by:

-Providing small group and individual educational instruction.

-Addressing targeted academic needs.

-Fostering relationships of trust among parents, students, staffs, and volunteers.

-Dedicating full efforts to knowledge gain.

-Decreasing at-risk behaviors.

-Offering a safe environment and online activities for program youth.

Schedules vary, but a typical day at EBT might look like:

-Students login Zoom to do meditation.

-Staffs lead students starting to do homework and reading.

-Enrichment activity: We provide educational activity options based on Texas Academic State Standards, as well as other social activities.

-We may include more physical activity before parents arrive to sign their children out for the day.

Important Responsibilities of a Volunteer Tutor:

The Online Volunteer After-School Tutor may perform, but is not limited to:

-Work with an assigned K-8 student or small group of students to provide the assistance in one or more academic subjects such as reading, writing, math, science, etc.

-Assist students to develop a better understanding of daily in-class and homework assignments.

-Clarify with students what they need help with.

-Provide subject knowledge without answering the questions for students.

-Assisting students with basic computer skills, and coach them in identifying resources to complete assignments and take the State’s required tests by helping them access resources such as textbooks, online databases and resources.

-Track student progress and report weekly to program coordinators.

-In the presence of a staff, maintain a safe and fun environment for all students.

-Review completed assignments and suggest ways to improve or supplement assignments.

-Provide positive feedback on the student’s progress and encourage the student’s continued focus on academic excellence.

-Build relationships and trust with parents, students, and the staff.

-With the guidance of the Center’s staff:

-Organize online recreation of arts & craft activities.

-Monitor students’ behavior.

-Mentor and provide positive role modeling.

Length of Appointment:

-Will serve for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters.

-Is eligible to continue in the 2020/2021 school year with approval from the director of tutors.

Time Commitment:

-A minimum commitment of 2 hours, and no more than 8 hours per week, for each week that school is in session.

-Login Zoom 5 minutes before the online session starts.

Qualifications:

-Preferable having a background in education K-12 teaching/special education; however, all are welcome to apply.

-Should be at least 17 years old.

-Should be mature, motivated, patient, adaptable, and demonstrate a positive demeanor at all times.

-Should pass a criminal history record check, and comfortable working with diverse populations.

-Preferable having experience working with children.

-Have a friendly and approachable manners.

-Command communication skills (bilingual highly desirable).

-Have a willingness to commit to a schedule and communicate about schedule conflicts (24 hour notice if possible).

-Respect of diverse lifestyles, cultures, religions and values.

-Teens must be in 11th grade or up, with a B GPA or above, and provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher.

Reports to: Director of Tutors, Long Pham (713-992-4013).

Support Provided: The director of volunteers is available on an ongoing basis to answer questions and provide other assistance as needed.
