Following a declared emergency survivors may be displaced from their homes and in need of temporary shelter. In the case of hurricanes, these shelters open after the storm has passed and may operate for several weeks.

The Shelter Service Worker is a temporary position assigned to work in a local American Red Cross shelter in Polk County, Florida. Volunteers support the day-to-day activities and provide client services within a shelter under the direction of a Shelter Supervisor. You may choose shifts of 4, 8 or 12 hours on consecutive days. Training is provided.

RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through non-profit, faith-based, and governmental agencies to help meet critical community needs. RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of volunteers with opportunities to help solve community problems and offers supplemental accident insurance while on duty, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.

  • Availability to sign up for shifts on consecutive days (shifts may be 4, 8 or 12 hours long)
  • Sit or stand for up to 2 hours at a time. Follow worker safety procedures for working in Covid environment.
