Looking to give back? Become a Meals on Wheels delivery driver today! Across Indian River County, volunteers with the Senior Resource Association are delivering nourishing meals to homebound seniors throughout the county. During this trying time, we need your help now more than ever. Here is what you can expect:
WHAT WILL I BE DOING WHEN I VOLUNTEER?
The most common and the most needed volunteer job is delivering meals and friendly greetings to homebound seniors. Most typically, this involves picking up meals at a central location and delivering them along a pre-determined route directly to the homes of several seniors in your area. Once you’re done, you return the delivery packaging items and get back on your way.
HOW OFTEN WILL I BE EXPECTED TO VOLUNTEER?We can set up a volunteer schedule that works with yours. While most volunteers deliver at least once a week, we can accommodate whatever your needs and availability may be. During COVID, we have limited our shift times. Delivery shifts currently take place Monday-Friday between 10-2pm
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO VOLUNTEER?An average delivery route will take about 90 minutes to 2 hours.
WILL I EAT WITH THE CLIENTS?Volunteers are expected to deliver the meal and generally check in with the clients to make sure they are okay through a friendly greeting or brief conversation. You are not expected to stay with the client for the meal.
We have seen our most vulnerable senior community impacted the most during this pandemic. With more and more seniors becoming homebound, it's crucial that we can continue to provide home delivered meals to those in need. Protecting the safety and health of our staff, volunteers and clients is our #1 priority. We have put policies in place that help do this and follow CDC guidelines. Volunteers no longer interact with other volunteers or staff, when picking up your delivery route we operate a "curbside" system that system that allows for social distancing. Additionally, all volunteers are required to wear masks while delivering, change gloves in between each stop and sanitize hands throughout a route. More safety training will be covered in orientation.
