Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement

  • 12 people are interested

Riis Settlement is looking for volunteers to support our adult English classes for immigrants in Queens. Volunteers can help with a variety of tasks depending in your skills and interests, including:

Street Outreach Team - We need friendly, enthusiastic volunteers to help spread the word about our free English classes. Volunteer teams will be distributing flyers and sharing information about our classes in neighborhoods across Western Queens (Astoria/LIC, Sunnyside/Woodside, Jackson Heights, Corona).

Student Registration - Assist new students with filling out registration forms and making sure that all information is complete and accurate. Facilitate a conversational English assessment with each student to determine their proficiency level and class placement. Bilingual volunteers are especially helpful for assisting students with the registration process in Spanish, Arabic, and Bangla. Training will be provided.

English Tutoring - Help students achieve fluency in English through 1-on-1 tutoring! By providing extra language practice outside of their English class, you will help students achieve improved fluency for practical use such as in social, educational, or professional settings. Volunteers will be matched with an individual student based on mutual availability. Study materials will be provided.

Due to COVID-19 this is a remote volunteering opportunity and all volunteer assignments above can be carried out by phone or online. A brief interview and orientation with Director of Immigrant Services will give more details. If interested, please reach out to ssimon@riissettlement.org!
