ORGANIZATION: CASA of the Coastal Bend

Learn how a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) helps children in foster care build their future while being their voice to advocate for their best interests and help find them their forever home. During this time it is crucial to have a strong voice and caring heart for all youth in foster care who are feeling the effects of not only their personal crisis but now also the public health crisis. CASA of the Coastal Bend serves children from Aransas and Nueces counties in Texas.

A virtual CASA training class will be offered via Zoom

  • 10 Hours of Zoom Training- Must Utilize Video
  • 10 Hours of Pre-Work
  • 10 Hours Homework/Review / Collaborative Family Engagement
  • 3 Hours of Court Room Observation via Zoom

If you are interested in becoming a CASA, the first step is to attend a Virtual Info Session via Zoom, held every Wednesday at Noon.

Join us on Zoom for a brief, non-committal 45 minute information session to hear about the roles and requirements of a CASA volunteer. These sessions explain the role of an advocate and the next steps in the application process.

Every Child Has A Chance It's YOU.

A few things you should know:
  1. To be a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) you must be 21 years of age or older.
  2. The Information Session and training is online via Zoom however this is not a completely virtual volunteer opportunity. Right now volunteer work is being done virtually but once social distancing is no longer required, volunteers will be required to attend court hearings in person on the case they are appointed to as well as visit their CASA child at least once a month. So preferably you should reside in close proximity to Aransas or Nueces counties in Texas to volunteer with our program.
  3. If you are not within the Aransas/ Nueces county areas, there are hundreds of CASA programs throughout the United States. You can visit this website to search for a program closest to you: https://nationalcasagal.org/our-work/programs/

CASA of the Coastal Bend's mission is to speak up for and find permanent homes for abused and neglected foster children in crisis throughout Nueces and Aransas counties in Texas. Description

When a child enters the child welfare system because his or her home is no longer safe due to abuse or neglect, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer to advocate for the best interest of the child in court, at school and in other settings. That volunteer is called a Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA. Advocates stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, loving, permanent home. For many children, who are abused or neglected, their CASA will be the one constant presence in their lives.

CASAs are everyday people - teachers, business people, retirees, stay-at-home moms and grandparents - who are committed to making a difference for children who might otherwise slip through the cracks of an overburdened foster care system. Advocates research case records and interview each person involved in a child’s life, including family members, teachers, doctors, lawyers and social workers. They monitor the progress of the child and family and advocate for the child’s current and future needs in court, in school and in agency meetings. CASA’s independent evaluations allow the court to make better informed decisions. Because advocates serve on 1-2 cases at a time, they truly get to know an individual child or sibling group. They provide sustained, personal attention to every child - just as every child deserves. We invite you to join our family of advocates and make a difference in a child’s life - and your own.
