With an above-average hurricane season predicted, and COVID-19 travel restrictions in place nationwide, the Red Cross is looking for more local volunteers to meet the need.
o Volunteers are especially needed in Sheltering (Supervisor and Service Associate positions).
§ The Red Cross will be placing those needing a safe place to stay in emergency hotel lodging whenever possible.
· If hotel stays are not possible, the Red Cross is prepared to open a traditional shelter following CDC guidelines to protect residents against the threat of COVID-19
§ Responsibilities may include work in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory and information collection.
§ Potential volunteers must be ready for the physical demands that working in a shelter bring, including the need to stand or sit for two-hour periods, walk for two miles in a shift or work outdoors in inclement weather
Licensed medical specialists are strongly encouraged to volunteer in Health Services (Supervisor and Service Associate positions)
§ Health Services volunteers must have a current, unencumbered license in at least one of the following professions:
· Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic, Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), Physician Assistant (PA), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
§ Responsibilities may include providing hands-on care for shelter clients including assisting with daily living, wound care, incontinence care and assistance with functional needs
§ Health Services volunteers may be called upon to provide health education, make health assessments, and determine if a higher level of care is needed
