ORGANIZATION: Homeless Garden Project

The Homeless Garden Project (HGP), founded in 1990, provides job training, transitional employment and supportive services to people who are homeless. In complement, HGP operates a thriving community education and volunteer program. HGP's programs take place in a 3-acre organic farm and related enterprises. Volunteer Position Opening: SOCIAL WORK VOLUNTEER Schedule: 12-16 hours/week; Tuesday/Wednesday, 9-3 or 9-5 Duration of position: 3-9 months Social Work Volunteers (SWV) Work one-on-one with trainees to promote trainees' full participation in our job training and transitional employment programs by addressing needs such as health care, legal issues, transportation and shelter. Support trainees to identify goals that will create and sustain their own well-being. Monitor trainee progress toward goals and support meaningful engagement in accomplishing goals. Foster trainee progress toward unsubsidized employment as a key long-term goal related to a career plan. Responsibilities Assessment Service planning Advocacy and referrals Counseling Desired traits and skills Good listening skills Well organized Appreciation of diversity Commitment to social justice Bachelor’s degree in a related field Orientation/Training Work under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Training in Motivational Interviewing, service planning and evaluation Benefits to volunteer Experience working in nonprofit social service setting Familiarity with community resources Develop counseling skills Gain training in Motivational Interviewing and Positive Psychology **This is a Referral Opportunity, which means it is run directly by one of our nonprofit partners. We provide training and transitional employment within a community-supported organic garden. Volunteers have many opportunities to learn about and help in the garden, in the kitchen, and with special events.

Description

The Homeless Garden Project (HGP) provides paid job training, transitional employment, and support services to people experiencing homelessness. In complement, the Project operates a community education and volunteer program that serves over 2,500 people annually. The programs take place at our 3.5-acre organic farm and related enterprises. Volunteers have many opportunities to learn about and help in the garden, in the kitchen, and with special events.
