Dog Walker

Sammie's Friends

If you like dogs and enjoy a little exercise, this is really a fun job. All of the dogs at the shelter get walked twice a day, every day, 365 days a year. It takes a whole crew of people to accomplish this and we are always looking for more walkers. Join us! One of the best parts is seeing a dog friend driving away with their new family. The work you do really helps get them adopted. Dog walking takes place at Sammie's Friends Nevada County Animal Shelter at 14647 McCourtney Rd, Grass Valley, CA 95949. This is what it takes: Approximately two hours for a shift - one in the morning (8:30 to about 10:30am) or one in the afternoon (2:30 to about 4pm). Teams of 3-5 walkers work each shift. We have a nice trail system blazed around the shelter. Each dog gets some fresh air, spends quality time with a human and perhaps learns some manners. We also have a new play yard for some off leash fun in the afternoons. This is what it accomplishes: Many things! By getting out of their kennels, the dogs suffer less from boredom and depression. They stay socialized and happy for human attention. We give potential adopters information about the dogs’ behavior. We watch for signs of medical or social problems and alert the shelter staff. And we all get a little exercise. Responsibilities and Duties: Walk dogs on designated trails allowing time to be in nature, while also socializing with the dogs; keeping them safe at all times. Adhere to all safety rules to ensure the safety of yourself, other volunteers, staff and the animals. Communicate any medical or behavioral concerns regarding the dogs you walk or have contact with during your volunteering time to staff or where designated. Qualifications: Must like dogs and have experience with being around animals. Must be 16 years or older. Must be able to walk and handle different levels of dog strength. How to join the Dog Walker Team: EXPRESS INTEREST and our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to find out what days and times you are available. They will also schedule a time for you to come out and train with one of our Lead Dog Walkers.
