Volunteer tutors serving at the Dominican Literacy Center can expect:
Remote Tutoring via Zoom (currently you can tutor from home!)
1 on 1 tutoring (2 hours a week)
two hours a week scheduled by us
tutor orientation and training in Adult Basic Skills (ABS)
materials provided with a supportive staff
building your volunteer hours and community service experience

Mission Statement
The purpose of this adult basic education program is to provide a tutoring service and conducive learning environment which will help adults improve their ability to meet the challenges of everyday living by advancing their skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, mathematics and basic computer skills. Respectful of the dignity of each person, it will offer the students education opportunities, which will prepare them to successfully love out their role as parent, worker and/or citizen. We are in need of both students and volunteer tutors. All is free and materials provided.
Description
In August, 1989, the Dominican Literacy Center first opened its doors. The beginning held risk and uncertainty, as staff members canvassed the Detroit east side area with flyers announcing the official opening of the Center.
The site began with three staff members and five tutors. However, by mid-September 1989, the increase in student requests was so great that additional tutors/volunteers were quickly sought from the community at large.
