The Schenectady Greenmarket is looking for volunteers to help us provide local food to our community. You can help out one Sunday or several Sundays if you're available! Volunteer descriptions can be found below.


Volunteer Assignments (morning and afternoon shifts):


Set up and Take down AM 7:30-9 PM 1:30-3


Morning

Assist with loading truck with equipment and supplies from building to move to market.

Set up tents, tables and chairs for market table, music, community tables, kids table.

Set up barricades, cones, and signage before the market opens.

Afternoon

Pack up supplies from market table and kids table.

Assist with taking down tents tables, chairs, signs and loading truck to return to the building.

Take down and store barricades and cones.

Help unload truck at building and secure all market items.

Floater AM 10-12 PM 12-2

Not that familiar with working at the market, get to know all the volunteer opportunities by filling in for breaks. Get to know the market better while assisting customers, vendors, and the other volunteers.

Help customers find vendors and help manager with any problems.

Provide breaks to Assistant Manager, Cashier, Assistant Cashier so they can shop, get coffee, etc.

Offer vendors an opportunity to take a break, do not handle sales while they are gone.

Assistant Manager AM 7:30-12 PM 12-3

Morning

Set up market table, community tables, kids table and market signage. Help setup barricades and tents.

Greet morning musicians and help them with set up as needed. And pay them, they need to sign the receipt and you keep the white copy and put it in the blue treasurer’s bag.

Greet other morning volunteers and Ambassadors and help them get set up.

Greet community table groups and help them get set up.

Once market opens monitor main entrances to market, remove and pack up orange stall markers.

Help customers find vendors and help manager with any problems.

Offer vendors an opportunity to take a break, do not handle sales while they are gone.


Afternoon

Greet afternoon musicians and help them with set up as needed. And pay them, they need to sign the receipt and you keep the white copy and put it in the blue treasurer’s bag.

Greet other afternoon volunteers and help them get set up.

Monitor main entrances to market, count incoming customers and record in the market log. (for 5 minutes every half hour)

Help customers find vendors and help manager with any problems.

Offer vendors an opportunity to take a break, do not handle sales while they are gone.

Assist Market Manager with token collection and check distribution during the last half hour of market.

Pack up market table and kids table in bins and load them in truck/van at the end of market. Assist with taking down the market.



Cashier & Assistant Cashier Responsibilities AM 9:45-12 PM 12-2:15

Process credit/debit and EBT/SNAP transactions and administer tokens to customers. Sell market bags. Volunteers can divide these however works for them.



Kids Table AM 10-12 PM 12-2

We provide simple projects and coloring sheets based around a weekly theme, for kids to do at market.

Volunteers help kids with the choose what to work on and loosely supervise or help if they wish the kids work.

Mostly the role is to let parents and children know there is a kid centered activity and be a welcoming face.

  • Orientation or Training
  • Shifts are 2-3 hours on average but you are welcome to help out longer. Volunteer opportunities are on Sunday only when our market is open.
