Working closely with the Executive Director and a small team of volunteers who help run our social media pages, you will gain experience utilizing social media to effectively communicate the mission of the Downriver Council for the Arts (DCA).
We have found the best way for us to manage our presence is by each user taking a topic. You are welcome to do more, it’s up to you and what you are comfortable with. It’s not a necessity, but we would love to share information about yourself on our social channels - introduce yourself; why you’re here; your interest in the DCA; if you are going to school and what your goals are; and your work if you are an artist. We want this to be a valuable experience for you. Perhaps you want to interview people, do a commentary, or a review? We are open to your ideas!
A DCA Social Media Communicator will:
- Plan and execute social media content, track impact, engage with users.
- Market the DCA and help identify new marketing opportunities.
- Have some experience or will learn social media beyond the basics-scheduling posts, Facebook ads, growing follower base, posting in groups, etc.
- Have your own computer/laptop, mobile device, and account on the above mentioned apps.
- Brainstorm with the team on fun topics we can cover to engage users.
- Possibly have some design experience or able to use apps like Canva or Spark Post, etc.
- Be able to communicate via Facebook Messenger and occasional online meetings and/or in person meetings at the arts center.
- Be a self-starter, work independently and be able to take initiative. You may need to motivate other volunteers (and artists) from time to time!
Helps if you have these qualifications:
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Strong interest in arts and culture and follow local and national news and trends.
- Be a team player, organized, and responsible. The ideal applicant will be genuinely passionate about the DCA’s mission and excited to work with a small arts nonprofit as it expands and grows!
We currently have restricted public arts center hours in relation to covid-19 conditions. Health and safety are a priority, so this position can be conducted offsite. We would, however, like to meet you, so this can be in person or via zoom.
This is an unpaid volunteer position; however, it can also equate to an internship with exchanged hours worked for college class credit. You are also able to earn credit hours from a non-profit organization for your group and/or place of employment (honor societies, scouts, etc.). We would be happy to make arrangements to accommodate this. Weekly commitment hours are up to you (typically at least a few) or can be determined by an internship. This position can be ongoing, but we would like your engagement for at least 2-3 months.
This volunteer position or internship is focused on providing real-world training and an out-of-classroom educational experience to those interested in pursuing a career in communications, public relations, journalism, arts administration, art history, studio arts, media arts, fine arts, humanities, entertainment.
To enrich the quality of life in the Downriver communities by advocating and promoting the arts and providing opportunities for involvement and participation in arts and cultural activities.
Founded in 1978, the Downriver Council for the Arts (DCA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that proudly serves nearly 400,000 residents in 21 Downriver communities. We actively support local artists and performers through artistic outreach programs and special promotional opportunities. The DCA also creates regional partnerships with other cultural organizations, schools and service clubs to promote artistic, cultural and special events throughout Southeast Michigan.
