Founded in the late 1800’s, Gifford is the oldest cageless no-kill cat shelter in the country. Located in Brighton near Boston College, Gifford’s mission is to decrease the homeless cat population in the Greater Boston area, to serve as a model of excellence in implementing national standards for the operation of animal shelters.

Gifford’s Board of Directors is the organization’s governing body, ensuring that mission objectives are fulfilled, overseeing staff and the large volunteer population, finances, and strategic planning. Board members are passionate about Gifford and its mission.

We are currently seeking to add a board member who would serve as a director-at-large This individual would be expected to attend board meetings, serve as an active board member and ambassador to the Gifford community, and share our passion for the shelter.

Responsibilities and qualifications:

Board members are expected to attend board meetings which are held approximately monthly, generally in Newton, Massachusetts or virtually via Zoom. They are also expected to be available for occasional conference calls or ad hoc meetings. As leading members of the Gifford community, board members are also expected to participate in fundraising and other events.

This position would focus on organizational development including staffing, training, human resource development, and executive coaching. The ideal candidate would have a background in human resources and/or have many years of people management experience at an executive level. They must be committed to animal welfare and the mission of the shelter, be available for board meetings in the Newton/Brighton area or via Zoom, and have the professionalism and integrity required to serve as a board member.

loving environment. We work to find safe, healthy, and loving permanent homes for the

cats in our care and to educate potential adopters and the general public about cat welfare

issues. We are the first cageless, no-kill shelter in the country and have been in existence since 1884.

We will never euthanize cats to create room to take in more cats.
