Danceability, Inc., a non-profit dance studio for children and adults with special needs is looking for classroom volunteers to work with our dancers throughout the upcoming dance season. Opportunity can fulfill community service hours.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Work one-on-one, or with a few dancers during class to assist them, encourage them and support them
- Model steps, good behavior and cheer them on
Requirements/Skills Needed:
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Must commit to a minimum of 1 hour per week during full season from September - May
- Willingness to work with the special needs community and assist dancers
- Must be vaccinated
- Shorter opportunities available during our 6-week summer session in July-August
Training & Supervision:
- Volunteers will be required to attend orientation to become familiar with the studio and their dancer(s) prior to the start of classes
- Reports to the dance teacher assigned to their class(es)
Time Commitment & Availability:
- We are looking for a regular commitment of at least one hour per week (consistent day/time each week, from September - May)
- Classes typically run Mondays - Thursdays from 4pm - 8pm

Description
Danceability is a dance and movement program for children and adults with special needs. Our dancers are challenged with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, mental retardation, learning disabilities, ADHD, and psychiatric disorders. Dancers attend class once a week from September to May. The first half of the season focuses on learning dance technique, building friendships, playing games and having fun. the second half of the year is preparation for our annual performance; learning a choreographed routine, getting a costume and rehearsing on stage. Dancers who need help are assisted by volunteers, so that parents and staff can relax in our waiting room. Families are encouraged to utilize the time their children are in class to relax, swap resources, vent and socialize with other families as a mini-respite for themselves.
