Come help distribute food at Union Settlement's General Store! In response to COVID-19, Union Settlement created a General Store, to help with food insecurity in East Harlem. Members of the community come to the store twice a week to shop for items such as shelf stable food and toiletries, at no cost. Volunteers will be needed from 8am-2pm and will assist with set-up and breakdown, check-in, and ensuring shoppers social distance from one another.

Spanish or Mandarin language skills are helpful, though not required.

Mission Statement

Union Settlement is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, we have brought education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.

Description

Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
