Stickwork Sculpture Willow Weaver

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Holden Arboretum

Since the early 1980s, artist Patrick Dougherty has delved into the relationships between structure and the natural world through his "Stickwork" installations. Each of his works, labyrinths of curved branches coalesced into cubes or castles, is unique to the space where it was built. In August 2020, Dougherty will be creating a Stickwork installation at Holden Arboretum at Spruce Knoll.

Following direction from artist Patrick Dougherty, volunteers will weave willow to form the sculpture. Additional tasks include fetching bundles of sticks and helping clean up at the end of your shift. Volunteers need to be comfortable working on a 6 foot ladder, able to work for four hours with a halfway break in sun and heat, have dexterity to weave branches and able to bend, kneel and carry bundles of sticks.

Installation dates are August 4 -14, 17-21. Shifts are 8am-Noon or 1-5pm. Volunteers should commit to at least three shifts.

Due to COVID-19, Stickwork volunteers must follow Holden Forests & Gardens guidelines, which include only volunteering if you are healthy, wearing a mask when within 10 feet of another person, keeping a physical distance of 6 feet from others, keeping your hands sanitized, and completing an online symptom screening form before every shift. A full list of guidelines will be shared with all potential volunteers.
