If you are passionate about helping children become successful readers or love reading yourself, this is the volunteer opportunity for you. Our volunteer community includes:

  • Parents reading aloud with their children
  • Students seeking community service hours
  • Teens who just love to read and share what they're reading
  • Librarians seeking to "book talk" more titles for children and youth audiences
  • Educators (current and retired) who want children to be successful readers
If your primary interest is getting a box checked to meet a community service requirement, we are not a match for you. Thank you for your interest, we wish you well.

The Reading Tub reads and profiles books for children from infant to age 16 (board books through young adult). Caregivers - the people picking books for kids and teens - want to know what the intended audience thinks, which is the critical component of our review process.

Once the volunteer opportunity is confirmed, readers can write profiles of books they've read; ask for specific matches based on their genre interests; or pick from our list of books we've been asked to review!

The Reading Tub does not provide review copies. We strongly encourage volunteers to select titles available from their local library.

CREDIT HOURS: For those seeking community service hours see "Time Commitment" below.

Mission Statement

To provide practical, integrative literacy services to readers at risk readers, families, and educators. Reading is a public commodity, no one should have to pay extra to become a literate member of society.

Description

The Reading Tub is a 100% volunteer nonprofit dedicated to helping families create strong readers and getting kids excited about books and reading.

  • We collect and distribute books to at-risk readers, whether it is a child with no books at home or a teacher building a classroom library for her struggling students.
  • We read lots of books and post reviews on our website. Our model includes the audience, so you know what a kid like yours thinks about the book.
  • We write about literacy and ways to incorporate literacy into everyday activities.
  • We help parents decipher educational jargon and make sense of literacy concepts in a way that’s meaningful to them.
